& Expeditions
Our courses are built around one idea: skills are worth more when they are put to work. Whether you are learning to dive or learning to grow food, everything you do here connects to the conservation and community work happening in Juara every day.
Courses & Expeditions
JTP Research Diver Programme
A one week introduction to conservation diving, designed to bridge the gap between recreational diving and practical marine conservation.
Through a combination of five training dives and interactive learning sessions, participants gain hands on experience of how diving can be used to monitor marine ecosystems, collect data and support real conservation work.
Rather than spending long periods in the classroom, learning is designed to be practical, interactive and directly applied underwater. Participants may use identification games, quizzes, underwater slates and real JTP data to build their understanding throughout the week.
The programme is flexible and adapts to current conservation priorities, seasonal conditions and ongoing JTP projects.
The Programme Includes
Three shore dives and two boat dives
5 hours worth of practical classroom sessions integrated into the week
Fish and coral identification
Basic reef and habitat survey techniques
Underwater data collection and recording
Citizen science and data management
Reef health and marine threat assessments
Exposure to practical conservation activities such as marine debris or ghost net assessments, coral monitoring, restoration work and underwater photography, depending on current projects and conditions

A foundation for conservation diving
The JTP Research Diver Programme is not designed to turn participants into scientific divers in one week. Instead, it provides a meaningful introduction to the principles and practical skills behind conservation diving, giving participants the confidence and understanding to assist with basic monitoring and conservation activities.
For those joining the Marine Conservation Diving Internship, the Research Diver Programme acts as the foundation for further development. Participants can continue building their skills through regular research dives, increased responsibility and involvement in a wider range of marine conservation activities.
Organic Farming & Sustainable Food Systems Course
Four day practical course
A four day practical course introducing participants to sustainable food production through hands on training in hydroponics, aquaponics and organic farming.
Over three days at Pulau Harvest, participants learn how modern soil free farming systems can be designed, operated and maintained. The final day takes participants to a local organic farm with Mak Long, where they explore traditional organic growing methods, composting, and the connection between sustainable food production and the kitchen.
Not sure which course is right for you?
Tell us what you are looking for and we will point you in the right direction. We also build bespoke conservation expeditions for groups, schools and organisations e.g we can help you build an ethical trip to Borneo to see the orangutans!

Our programme is open to gap-year and university students, career breakers, divers, families, and anyone considering a future in conservation. No previous experience is required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved.

Volunteers need to be 18 or over, and families with children aged 10 and up are welcome with parental supervision. Beyond that, we look for a passion for marine life, good physical fitness and general health, a strong work ethic, the ability to adapt to a range of tasks, and a readiness to get your hands dirty and handle the occasional long day.

Do some reading on sea turtle conservation and Tioman Island beforehand, so the issues turtles face here and worldwide make sense in context. If you are coming from a different culture, expect some culture shock at first, and arrive ready to adapt to the simpler, slower pace of island life.
