About Us
The Juara Turtle Project began in 2001 as a single hatchery protecting the nesting beaches of Juara Bay. More than two decades later, it has grown into an independent NGO working across sea turtle conservation, coral reef restoration, sustainability, and community education on Tioman Island.
2001
Founded by the Fisheries Department Malaysia to protect Juara's turtle nesting beaches.
2006
The original five-year project was due to close. John Amos stepped in to continue the work, and JTP became an independent organisation backed by UWCSEA Singapore.
2008
The Royal Family of Pahang joined through their TAT initiative, and a dedicated conservation centre was built.
2017
Work expanded beyond turtles to include coral reef rehabilitation, environmental education, and waste management.
Today
More than 200 volunteers, students, and researchers from around the world join JTP every year.
Our Values
Five connected values guide every decision we make. Each one feeds the next, creating a continuous cycle of learning and action.
-
Advance conservation knowledge and use long-term monitoring to guide our work.
-
Protect the species and habitats we work with and support long-term recovery through evidence-based action.
-
Reduce our environmental impact and improve waste, energy, and food systems across the project and community.
-
Share knowledge through hands-on learning and partner with institutions to build capacity.
-
Work with local people at every stage and prioritise community wellbeing alongside conservation.
📍 Tioman Island, Malaysia
Where the Rainforest Meets the Reef
Juara sits on the quiet eastern coast of Tioman Island, at the meeting point of two protected environments: the Tioman Marine Park, which safeguards the island's reefs and surrounding waters, and the island's terrestrial forest reserve, home to ancient rainforest and an extensive network of jungle trails. Here, conservation happens across both land and sea.
🪸 A Bay Shaped by Nature
Three fringing coral reefs sit within walking distance of our centre, with direct shore access for snorkelling, diving, and reef restoration, no boat required. Just behind the beach, jungle paths lead to waterfalls, streams, and rainforest.
🏘️ A Community at the Heart of Conservation
Unlike larger tourist destinations, Juara has kept its small, family-run character and slower pace. Residents, businesses, and schools work side by side to protect the beaches, forests, and reefs that make the village so special.
🎓 The Perfect Living Classroom
Protected reefs, tropical rainforest, and a supportive community make Juara an ideal place to learn. Whether monitoring nests, restoring coral, or exploring jungle trails, visitors experience conservation where it actually happens.
