Hot and Cold Hatchery Comparison

  BEACH SHADED
Days incubating 48.625 59.43
% hatch rate success 81.995 84.049
% undeveloped and cooked 69.44 47.76
% rotten and maggots 5.56 34.33
% developed but unhatched 5.56 19.4

Conclusion
The shaded hatchery was much cooler and thus eggs took longer to incubate. This is also shown by temp logger data. The shaded hatchery was around 28 degrees celsius whereas the beach was about 30-31. This needs to be fixed next year to ensure better gender balance. % success was unaffected. More eggs on the beach were unhatched due to overheating (cooked) and very little due to maggots. The shaded hatchery had much more vegetation and was located closer to jungle therefore more insect eggs. Next year the hatchery should be located on the beach (away from vegetation) but with a shade. However the shade this year was too thick (80-90% shade) so a new mesh should be bought or next year that is less shade (maybe 40-50%).

Documents and Studies

Malaysian Sea Turtle Legislature
Written by a environmental law student that stayed here at JTP. He spent significant amount of time searching the Internet for documents on what the actual legal standing is for the protection of Sea Turtles in Malaysia.

While we found that Malaysia is considerably well versed in their national conservation policies, there are many localised aspects to conservation legislature that are not actually on plane with national policies.

This document is a .zip package file. When extracted it contains a "Manual" file / table of contents and then number coded files of the research done.

Some of the larger original files have also been summarised for our reading convenience.

Download it here: Malay Turtle Laws.

2006 Report on JTP Procedure
Written by an EcoFieldtrips group in 2006. You can find a link to EcoFieldtrips on our links page. Written as a procedure analysis for the project in its early days.

This document gives a good summary of not only this project but also ideal methods for small hatchery operations in general. It also gives good information on what is proper to be done and the reasoning behind it.
